একবার বাতাস এবং সূর্যের মধ্যে তর্ক হয়েছিল।

Once the Wind and the Sun had an argument.

“আমি তোমার চেয়ে শক্তিশালী,” বাতাস বলল।

“I am stronger than you,” said the Wind.

“না, তুমি নও,” সূর্য বলল।

“No,  you are not,” said the Sun.

 ঠিক সেই মুহুর্তে তারা একটি পথিককে রাস্তা দিয়ে হেঁটে যেতে দেখল।

Just at that moment they saw a traveler walking across the road.  

তাকে শাল দিয়ে জড়ানো ছিল।

He was wrapped in a shawl.

সূর্য এবং বায়ু একমত যে যে ব্যক্তি তার শাল থেকে ভ্রমণকারীকে আলাদা করতে পারে সে শক্তিশালী।

The Sun and the Wind agreed that whoever could separate the  traveller from his shawl was stronger.  

দ্য উইন্ড প্রথম মোড় নিল।

The Wind took the first turn.

সে তার কাঁধ থেকে ভ্রমণকারীর শাল ছিঁড়তে তার সমস্ত শক্তি দিয়ে উড়িয়ে দিল।

He blew with all his might to tear the traveller’s shawl from his  shoulders.

 কিন্তু তিনি যতই জোরে ফুঁ দিয়েছিলেন, যাত্রী ততই শক্ত করে শালটা তার শরীরে চেপে ধরল।

But the harder he blew, the tighter the traveller gripped the shawl to his body.  

হাওয়ার পালা শেষ না হওয়া পর্যন্ত লড়াই চলল।

The struggle went on till the Wind’s turn was over.  

এবার সূর্যের পালা। সূর্য উষ্ণভাবে হাসল।

Now it was the Sun’s turn. The Sun smiled warmly.

 পথিক হাসছে সূর্যের উষ্ণতা অনুভব করল।

The traveller felt the warmth of the  smiling Sun.

শীঘ্রই তিনি শালটি খুলতে দিলেন।

Soon he let the shawl fall open.

 সূর্যের হাসি আরও উষ্ণ এবং উষ্ণ হয়ে উঠল… আরও গরম এবং উত্তপ্ত।

The Sun’s smile grew warmer and warmer…  hotter and hotter.

 এখন পথিকের আর তার শালের প্রয়োজন নেই।

Now the traveller no longer needed his shawl.

ওটা খুলে নিয়ে মাটিতে ফেলে দিল।

He took it off and dropped  it on the ground.

সূর্যকে বাতাসের চেয়ে শক্তিশালী ঘোষণা করা হয়েছিল।

The Sun was declared stronger than the Wind.  

নৈতিক: নৃশংস শক্তি একটি মৃদু হাসি যা করতে পারে তা অর্জন করতে পারে না।

Moral: Brute force can’t achieve what a gentle smile can.
